A People and Stories, and Creative Harbour Project
in association with Action Asylum, and Portsmouth City of Sanctuary

Sanctuary was an exciting cross-arts programme of workshops, performances and installations, based on what it means to find sanctuary in Urban South-East Hampshire.

People have sought refuge here for centuries, and continue to do so from all over the world. Working with artists, refugees, volunteers, and schools across the region, we brought together ideas, creative practice, and opportunities for people's stories to be seen.

"The Sanctuary installation provided a powerful stimulus for students and staff to explore what it means to feel safe and at ‘home’. The performance itself was superb. entertaining, informative and extremely moving. The honesty with which stories were told and misconceptions were challenged, meant students were able to understand the idea of sanctuary, and show compassion for others." Head Teacher

"At first I wasn’t sure if I’d enjoy the performance, but about 5 minutes in I was hooked. It was really emotional. They were so honest and it really made me and my friends think about how we treat others and the kind of world we want to create in the future."
Student

"As a history teacher, the ways in which migration and sanctuary over time were conveyed was perfect. It gave students a really clear concept on changes over time, but also the fact that as human beings, sanctuary and our definition of home are constant themes across time."
Teacher

"It's been an honour and a privilege, taking part in this hugely important project,
dealing with such pertinent world issues."
Artist

"I wish it could go on and on. I've loved my time on this project."
